2009 AUCTION RECAP: MIAZGA-HERIGODT STANDOFF

Welcome to Finks League season 2009.

Thanks for getting your bid sheets in. For those interested in a behind-the-scenes look at this year's auction, perhaps the highlight had to be the blind-draw selection pitting the husband-wife clash of Mike Miazga's Eggers and defending champion Kris Herigodt's Brawlers. In what should be considered more than a coincidence, both Mike and Kris bid 11 cents for PK Hartley NO.

Other notes:

  • By far, the most popular player in the auction was RB Jones-Drew JAX, who received five bids amounting to $95.28. Quags (33.23) won out over Serkus (31.01).
  • The auction's top bidder belonged to Dah Commish's more than generous $42.10 bid for RB Turner ATL. What was he thinking?
  • The Eggers got who they wanted. Miazga nailed three of his top four RB selections and four of his top six WR selections.
  • Missed it by that much. The Posse nipped Serkus .52-.51 for RB McFadden OAK. The Eggers beat Newt 15.07-15.00 for WR A. Johnson HOU. The Barrels topped Serkus for WR Bowe KC, 2.04-2.01.

In our 16th year, the bid sheets still vary from owner to owner. If you have an empty roster spot, then you got beat out for your selections. Free-agent bidding begins after Week 1. Good luck to you all.

WEEK 13 WRAPUP

The division front-runners were unable to clinch playoff berths, though they still hold decided advantages. Lombardi Division leaders Brawlers and Ghost could clinch berths in Week 14. They split season series over division rivals, preventing the clincher.

Quags also split a season series over third place Serkus, but should pull off the clincher in Week 14. There's a good chance Week 15 games could be meaningless.

WEEK 12 WRAPUP

Newt owner Jeff Newton asked if he was playoff eligible at 5-7. Heck, everyone in the Lombardi Division is playoff eligible, even the last place Newts. Newt dropped a league season-high 83 points on first place Quags, so anything can happen.

Newt was powered by 29 Finks points from RB Turner ATL, who scored four TDs against CAR. Things are not coming into much focus in the Shula Division, where the Barrels did not help themselves with the season's first tie, 42-42 to the Eggers. Stay tuned.

WEEK 11 WRAPUP

Things just get weirder and weider in Finks League 2008. Check out the standings in the Lombardi Division through Week 11.

Serkus owner Stan Goff if feeling relieved after watching the Browns squeak out a win on MNF. Goff's email subject said it all: Kicker gone Wild!. Serkus earned 25 points by its PK, but Goff wrote about a similar memory from years ago.

Goff: "I got 25 points from my kicker last night! At first I thought it might be a Finks record, but I recall a game against Bill Stone a decade ago where he went on a trip to England or Ireland...and he saw that my beloved Cowboys beat the Eagles 21-7, so he assumed my kicker got 3 PATs (Roger Ruzek I believe) and that he had defeated me (probably Ryan’s Hope back then). This was before e-mail and Internet and the best he could do was see a score in agate a couple days after the game. But it was actually SEVEN field goals that powered the Cowboys to victory so I had indeed knocked off the Stone Ponies.
Anyway, I was trailing 34-29 heading into last night and then piled up 25 points from Dawson and 5 more from Braylon Edwards (100 yards) so I believe Serkus Act has a 59-34 triumph to report."

WEEK 10 WRAPUP

Look out now. There's a new sheriff in town. Brawlers rookie owner Kris Herigodt is on a roll. The Brawlers won their fourth consecutive match win Week 10, beating Barrels 45-21. The win put the Brawlers into a first-place tie with the Sharks in the Lombardi Division.

The Brawlers have outscored the Sharks on the season and the two teams meet a second time in Week 14. The Sharks won the season opener over the Brawlers 41-28.

Rookie owners usually have mixed success in their first year. Only Ghost owner Steve Cline and late Scum owner Jeff Ponczak have won titles in their first year. I guess my brother, Mike, would have been considered a rookie owner when he won the league's first title.
